Nature and man have here created an extraordinary network of lakes, canals, estuaries, lagoons and the deltas of 44 rivers draining into the Arabian Sea. The Malayalam word kaayal stands for this labyrinth of waterways: 1200 miles in all, providing irrigation for crops, drinking water and transportation for local communities, and trade routes for coconut and copra, rubber, rice and spices. 560 miles are navigable in your vallom, from the vast Vembanad Lake behind the seaport of Kochi (Cochin) to the palm-fringed narrows and islands further inland, rich in bird and animal life. Many local people live as they have for centuries, in rows of houses strung along the raised bunds that border the emerald-green rice paddies - the granary of Kerala. They thrive on fishing and fish-farming, palm cultivation and associated crafts…and welcoming discerning tourists.
